Field of Giants
'The Distance Between Us All'
Field of Giants are an alternative metal and rock band from the United Kingdom. The band has released three studio albums, We Are, In Arcadia, and most recently The Distance Between Us.
First word that springs to mind is explosive - this is highly energetic and dynamic stuff - A sort of 'Karnivool meets Linkin Park post Meteora' if I had to give a quick summary.
The album kicks off in a very punchy manner with the title track. 'The Distance Between Us All' is a fine example of how to put together a well arranged heavy rock song. It really hooks you in with a catchy groove from the get go. Sometimes even the distorted guitar style serves a spacey Eastern touch, especially towards the end of the song (the last section I wish lasted longer!)
This album is brim-full with enjoyable impressions - 'Transform' is one of those top songs, full of dynamics and melancholy pure. Fantastic melodies all over. This is my first experience with the band and my interest in them kept rising while listening to this album over and over again.
'Say' intro takes a step into new areas, piano, interesting chord progression choices which make for a more sophisticated listen. This song reminds me of the excellent Vex Red band from the late 90s/early 00s and if this was released back then I am sure it would be getting the full recognition it deserves.
The stops and starts, the time signatures and the great variety of experimentation selected by the band are inspried and executed perfectly throughout the album. The symbiosis of technical and composing skills which you can find here is truly making a big difference compared to some other bands which are trying to enter this level. Great expansive tone from the guitar with the bass just as necessary. The vocals powerful and soaring, reaching for a nicely balanced act. The drumming is played very accentuated with constant varying fills and beats to keep you interested.

'Nothing From You' has lovely sways between the verses and chorus with some nice sonic feedback from the guitars from the former. My only gripe is that this release is on the short side to be considered an album and 'Into The Wild', while it's a good song, it's a bit too straight forward and safe. It does not feel like a song to close off the release, 'Say' feels more like a closer.
With a clear American stamp in their music, the band is probably UK's highest hope for something really great coming out of the modern alternative scene. This album definitely belongs to your collection when you are keen on sophisticated heavy progressive rock music - simply perfect. Keep these guys on your watchlist!
